To further these ends, the corporation will: - Provide the community with the opportunity to purchase fresh, locally produced and seasonal products; - Educate the public about the benefits of locally produced, fresh food by undertaking and participating in educational programs and other activities that promote and encourage the consumption and use of local agricultural products; - Organize and participate in those activities, that in conjunction with the operation of a farmers' market, will serve to encourage the betterment of the community, improve public health and increase commerce, trade and agritourism in Washington; and - Work with organizations such as Penn State Cooperative Extension, Pennsylvania Association of Sustainable Agriculture and similar organizations to promote the production and sale of agriculture products from the region. - Work with community partners, such as the Area Agency on Aging, local food pantries and similar organizations, to make fresh, locally produced food more available to at-risk populations.
Programs and Services
- MSFM has successfully operated The Main Street Farmers Market in downtown Washington for twelve years, providing a wide range of locally grown agricultural products to our community. Each market day we promote community service organizations and present family programming, as well as live musical performances, all at no cost. Our Market strives to serve all segments of our community; we were one of the first farmers markets in Western Pennsylvania to accept SNAP
- Benefits through an electronic reader and tokensystem, and we work with our local community food bank to provide fresh produce to those in need. We are very proud that our Market has become Washington’s de facto town square, bringing together people from our City’s neighborhoods, W&J College, local businesses, senior citizens centers and neighboring towns.
- Moreover, the Market promotes and enhances economic activity in the Washington County area in general and the City of Washington downtown area in particular. Many of our vendors have been part of the Market since we began and have been able to grow sales volumes each year we have operated.
- There has been a significant increase in foot traffic in the downtown area as a direct result of the Market and we have been a successful incubator for new small businesses including women owned businesses, agricultural businesses and small manufacturing operations.
