In 1998, Make‐A‐Wish provided Johna Belfiore with one of the most special experiences of her short life, a trip to Disney World. Here she was able to collect autographs from Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters, one of her favorite hobbies. Johna also liked to collect M&M memorabilia and listen to the music of O‐Town, the Backstreet Boys and N*SYNC.
Despite Johna’s physical challenges, she was involved in her community. At Trinity Middle School, Johna volunteered as a library aide. She was also a member of the St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Canonsburg. She liked therapeutic horseback riding and playing Challenger Baseball. In the summers, she enjoyed attending camps such as Camp Aim (YMCA) and Camp Laughalot (Association for Retarded Citizens).
Sadly, Johna died at the tender age of 19 on September 7, 2001. Her parents, Jonnie and Ralph (Pacer) Belfiore, received many memorial gifts from family and friends. They used these gifts to create the Johna Belfiore Memorial Fund. This fund will allow them to recommend grants to funding many of the charities that helped Johna during her lifetime including Make‐A‐Wish, United Cerebral Palsy, the YMCA and ARC. Their hope is that others in need may have their lives enriched, as Johna did.
