WCCF Awards More Than $100,000 in Scholarships to Area Students

The Washington County Community Foundation (WCCF) has completed its post-secondary scholarship cycle for 2016, awarding 60 scholarships totaling $104,500.  At least one graduate from every Washington County school district received an award.

The funds, awards, students, high schools and their college plans are:

Alice Boone Main Memorial Fund –Levi West, McGuffey High School, received $500 to attend Slippery Rock University and will study accounting.

Arthur V. Ciervo Scholarship Fund – Jacob Paci, Bethlehem Center, received $500 to attend Thiel College and will study criminal justice.

Barry Clark Barto Scholarship Fund – Aura Boling, Burgettstown High School, received $500 to attend California University of Pennsylvania and will study communication disorders.  

Black Family Scholarship Fund – Awards of $1,000 each went to Vanessa Black, West Greene High School, who will study nursing at Waynesburg University, and Jenna Laudermilt, Avella High School, who will study secondary education at California University of Pennsylvania.

Buckholt Science Scholarship Fund – Emily Clemens, McGuffey High School, received $500 and will study veterinary sciences at Washington & Jefferson College.

Burgettstown Jr.-Sr. High School Student Council Leadership Scholarship Fund – Liam Walsh, Burgettstown High School, received $500 and will study business administration at Carnegie Mellon University.

Burgettstown Lions Club Scholarship Fund – Three Burgettstown High School seniors received scholarships:

  • Jessica Weber received $250 and will study nursing at Kent State University.
  • Autumn Gianfrancesco received $250 to pursue physician assistant studies at the University of Pittsburgh.
  • Ian Cunningham received $500 and will study civil engineering at Pennsylvania State University – Behrend.

CAS/Dr. Kim Stacher Scholarship Fund – Michael Elliott, Bethlehem Center High School, received $1,000 and will study at Pennsylvania State University – Fayette.

Chapman Family Scholarship Fund – Ten awards were made from this fund. They went to:

  • Nicole Keller, Avella High School, $1,000, who will study nursing at Western Area Career and Technology Center.
  • Santana Stewart, McGuffey High School, $1,000, who will study nursing at Western Area Career and Technology Center.
  • Kellin Daley, Peters Township High School, $2,000, who will study early childhood education and pursue a career and living studies certificate at Millersville University.
  • Desiree Rose, Waynesburg Central High School, $4,000, who will study nutrition and foods at the University of Pittsburgh.
  • Morgan Simkovic, Jefferson Morgan High School, $4,000, who will study exercise science at Slippery Rock University.
  • Liang Xue, Chartiers-Houston High School, $4,000, who will study chemical engineering at the University of Pittsburgh.
  • Elizabeth Ambrose, Bentworth High School, $4,000 and will study music education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
  • Jonathan Florian, Trinity High School, $4,000, who will study chemical engineering at Pennsylvania State University.
  • Noah Peternel, Bentworth High School, $4,000, who will study electrical engineering at Grove City College.
  • Kaylee Spitak, $4,000, who will study economics/mathematics at Chatham University.

Charles Pappas, Sr. Scholarship Fund – Paige Davis, Burgettstown High School, received $1,500 and will study at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Christman Family Scholarship Fund – Tajah Haley, Washington High School, received $4,000 and will study early childhood education at Ohio University.

Clyde J. Tracanna/Washington Rotary Club Educational and Vocational Fund – Awards of $1,000 each were made to:

  • Chelsea Travis, McGuffey High School, who attend the pharmacy doctorate program at Ohio Northern University.
  • Courtney Crouch, Trinity High School, who will attend the pre-law program at Washington & Jefferson College.
  • Laura Wicker, Washington High School, who will study mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh. 

D. Jack & Geraldine L. Gaido Memorial Scholarship Fund – Melody Juan, First Love Christian Academy, $4,000 to pursue worship studies at Liberty University.

Dave Pew Memorial Scholarship Fund – Kyle Johnson, Peters Township High School, received $500 and will study music performance at Carnegie Mellon University.

David O. and Sara F. Johnson Family Education Fund – Sarah Sushel, McGuffey High School, received $1,000 and will study psychology/social work at West Liberty University.

Dr. Paul Pipik Fund for Study in the Health Sciences – Emily Coffman, Bethlehem Center High School, received $850 and will study occupational therapy at Gannon University.

Elizabeth Plumer Memorial Scholarship – Christopher Fuller, Trinity High School, received $1,000 and will study secondary education/history at Slippery Rock University.

Heart of Giving ScholarshipFund/Steel Nation Scholarship – Garrett Tatano, Canon-McMillan High School, received $1,000 and will study electrical engineering at the University of Maryland.

Hunter Lafe McAdoo Scholarship Fund – Kayla Baxendell, McGuffy High School, received $1,000 and will study pharmacy at Ohio Northern University.

John & Sophie Choratch Scholarship Fund – Five awards of $5,000 were made from this fund. Recipients are:

  • Brooke Dorsey, undergraduate at West Liberty University and McGuffey High School graduate, who is studying business management and marketing.
  • Boomer Kemp, Peters Township High School, and will study public health/pre-physical therapy at Slippery Rock University.
  • Alana Luppino, Washington High School, and will study environmental science at the University of Miami
  • Angela Luppino, Washington High School, and will study at Ohio University
  • Mikala Maltony, Washington High School, and will study nursing at the University of Akron 

Joseph P. Femiani Memorial Scholarship – Samuel Lindsay, Peters Township High School, received $1,000 and will study engineering at the University of Pittsburgh.

Kerns Family Scholarship Fund – Katie-Scarlett Loya, McGuffey High School, received $1,000 and will study animal science at Pennsylvania State University.

Kirk C. Moninger Fund – Emma Flickinger, Trinity High School, received $400 and will study mechanical engineering at Pennsylvania State University.

Kiwanis Club of Washington Scholarship Fund – Aura Bolinger, Burgettstown High School, received $1,000 and will study communication disorders at California University of Pennsylvania.

Linda LeFever Scholarship Fund – Cha’Mar Jones received $1,000 to continue studies at Carnegie Mellon University.

Margaret Pitek Ciervo Scholarship Fund – Allison Ankney, Bethlehem Center High School, received $500 and will study pharmacy at Purdue University.

Megan J. Phillis Scholarship Fund for Academic Excellence – Liam Walsh, Burgettstown High School, received $500 and will study business administration at Carnegie Mellon University.

Olivia Scott Scholarship Fund – Awards of $1,000 each were made to Matthias Campion, Peters Township High, who will study nursing at Cedarville University, and Mallory Hamilton, McGuffey School District, who will study business at Slippery Rock University.

Rebecca Sarah Rogers Scholarship Fund – Maria Sova, Washington High School, received $1,000 and will study education at California University of Pennsylvania.

Ringgold Alumni Scholarship Fund – Christopher D’Emidio, Ringgold High School, received $250 and will study biology at West Virginia University.

Ronald T. Miller, II Scholarship Fund – Benjamin Brandt, Peters Township High School, received $1,000 and will study computer engineering at the University of California at Los Angeles.

Ryan Johnston & Vaughn Johnston Scholarship Fund ­­– Moriah McGuier, McGuffey High School, received $1,000 and will study biochemistry at St. Vincent College.

Sam & Bev Minor Fund – Nicholas Fulks, Canon-McMillan High School, received $1,000 and will study environmental science at California University of Pennsylvania.

Sprowls College & Post-Graduate Scholarship Fund – Leah Rupinsky, Fort Cherry High School, received $1,000 and will study biology at the University of Pittsburgh.

CHROME FCU/Ed Orisko Scholarship – Three awards of $1,500 each went to:

  • Zachary Ames, Charleroi High School, who will study economics at the University of Pittsburgh
  • Jason Beck, Ringgold High School, who will study geosciences at Pennsylvania State University
  • Chloe Grzyb, Peters Township High School, who will study chemistry at John Hopkins University

 Washington County Visiting Nurses’ Association Scholarship Fund – Four awards of $1,500 each went to:

  • Hannah Allender, McGuffey High School graduate who studies nursing at Ashland University.
  • Rachel Campion, Peters Township High School graduate who studies nursing at West Virginia Wesleyan College.
  • Gwen Caven, Peters Township High School graduate, who is pursuing nurse/nurse anesthetist studies at Ohio State University.
  • Mariah Ketter, Fort Cherry High School graduate, who studies nursing at Waynesburg University.

Washington County Community Foundation WCCF also awards scholarships for students with financial needs through three funds. The EPK Fund awards pre-kindergarten scholarships for children to attend qualified pre-school programs; the ESO Fund benefits students who wish to attend grades K-12 at non-public schools; and the EOS Fund allows students who would otherwise attend a school classified as low-achieving to attend a participating non-public or public school outside the recipient’s school district.
