As a surprise gift to Richard and Margaret White, on the occasion of Richard's retirement as President of Washington Federal Saving Bank, Washington Federal and a long list of businesses and individuals made contributions to create the Richard L. & Margaret B. White Fund. 

Richard and Margaret met while he was working for Washington Federal and she for Mellon Bank.  After they  married, Margaret left her 9 to 5 job to work full-time as a wife, mother, and family care-giver.  She was very active in the PTA and various youth organizations.  Later, she began volunteering for the Washington Hospital. 

Richard, who spent more than 40 years with Washington Federal, was very active in the community.  He was a Founding Trustee of the Washington County Community Foundation, serving as Treasurer in its beginning years.  Other foundations with which Richard has been involved are the Washington Federal Charitable Foundation and the Washington Hospital Foundation.  He is a past chairman of the Washington County Council on Economic Development. 

Richard and Margaret lost their first son, Brian, at the age of seven.  They also have two grown children, Lisa and Eric.
