On with the show! The Washington Community Theatre (WCT), a local all-volunteer charity which provides opportunities for the community to enjoy theatre as either participants or audience members, has been named the winner of this year’s President’s Choice Award. This honor includes a $10,000 unrestricted grant from the Acorn Fund.
Dedicated to maintaining local interest and participation in theatre art, WCT prides itself on providing high-quality, affordable shows for the community.
The WCT’s community impact is considerable. This summer marks the 50th anniversary of the group’s first summer performance. And with that kind of longevity, WCT now has both third and fourth generation volunteers.
Not only does WCT offer on-stage opportunities for actors, there are wide variety of behind-the-scene roles for volunteers. Involvement is open to anyone, so WCT currently has participants ranging in age from seven to 80 years old. In 2017, the group expanded its impact by initiating its WCT Kidz program to provide new opportunities for local youth.
As “Improvement on the Statement of Financial Position” is a core criterion of the award, the efforts of WCT leadership to improve the group’s balance sheet are worthy of recognition.
From 2014 to 2017, the WCT increased their revenues to a point at which they were able to more than double their reserve from roughly $30,000 to $68,000. For an all-volunteer community theatre group that does not receive any government support, this attention to financial health is impressive.
WCT will use the $10,000 grant from the Acorn Fund to support all of its yearly programming for the 2019 season, which runs from June to November. This summer, a production of the musical “Mamma Mia!” will be hosted at the newly renovated Washington Park Main Pavilion, an all-kids performance of “Dorothy in Wonderland” will follow, and a hilarious dinner theatre version of “The Odd Couple” will close out the year at the Elks Lodge.
The President’s Choice Award will support the WCT in its continuous growth. And, the timing of this honor seems like a perfect way to celebrate WCT’s golden anniversary of bringing distinctive and engaging theatre productions to Washington County.
