Habitat for Humanity International Washington County
Habitat for Humanity exists to provide affordable housing for those in need.
Programs and Services
- Washington County Habitat for Humanity builds safe, decent, affordable homes for qualifying, deserving families in need of better living conditions. Our family partners must meet certain criteria such as poor living conditions, overcrowding, must be within in our income guidelines, have a decent credit score, have a two year work history and be able to afford the no interest mortgage on their new home. The family partner must also complete 350-500 sweat equity hours.
- They also need to attend homeowner classes and save money for their closing costs. A few weeks ago we placed another partner family (in this particular instance our 55th) in a new home of their own. Neither this home, nor the 54 which have come before it, could have been constructed without the financial support of our donors.
- The next home we will be building will go to a 50 year old women who has adopted her daughters four children and is in the process of adopting another little girl her daughter gave birth to in February. Her daughter is not able to take care of her children. So instead of the children going into foster care and being split up, she adopted them a few years ago. She was approved for a home through Habitat for Humanity because she has meet the criteria, income guide lines, overcrowding and unsafe living conditions.
- The children ages range from twelve years to four years. They are all very excited to have a safe place to live, a house where Grandma does not have to sleep on the couch by the front door so she can hear if someone is trying to break in during the night. She told me that when her kids ask to go to McDonald's, she always asks them what do you want more a hamburger or a new house. They always choose the new house.
