Washington County Bar Foundation


Established in 1989 for the purpose of further cultivating the science of jurisprudence, improving the legal and judicial system and facilitating the administration of justice through the support of pro bono efforts, legal services for the indigent, law-related education and scholarships, and public information and educational initiatives.

Programs and Services

  • CIVIC EDUCATION. Promotes civic education in schools and the community of Washington County, and provides assistance to the county’s public libraries. Provides programs such as the annual Law Day Celebration, “I Signed the Constitution!” and “Legal Issues Now that you are 18” programs, People’s Law School multi-week series, Courthouse tours, speakers bureaus, “Justice Day” program for Leadership Washington County, and voters' guides and forums.
  • COMMUNITY GIVING. Provides grants to a variety of local agencies for law-related programs, including Domestic Violence Services of SWPA and to CASA for Kids Inc., as well as support for projects such as “Law Works 4 You,” a year-long justice awareness program at LeMoyne Community Center. An annual Holiday Gift Drive raises funds for homeless and displaced children.
  • ACCESS TO JUSTICE. Enhances access to justice by fostering programs that deliver legal services to the poor. It works closely with Southwestern Pennsylvania (SWPA) Legal Services to secure legal representation for eligible clients in cases where conflicts of interest occur. The Bar Foundation also creates opportunities for members of the legal profession to provide pro bono representation for the indigent.
  • SUPPORT OF THE PROFESSION. Promotes the advancement of continuing education for those in the legal profession and maintains an Educational Assistance Fund for scholarships for attorneys new to the profession. Maintains a fund for attorneys who are experiencing a health- or emergency-related crisis. Scholarships are provided to Washington County residents attending Pitt and Duquesne Law Schools.
