Mission

Established in 1989 for the purpose of further cultivating the science of jurisprudence, improving the legal and judicial system and facilitating the administration of justice.

Programs and Services

  • Three areas of focus:
  • Civic Education -- promotes law-related education in the schools and community of Washington County; provides assistance to the county's public libraries; hosts programs such as the annual Law Day Celebration, "I Signed the Constitution!," “Time to Adult! Legal Issues Now that you are 18," Rule of Law seminar series, Courthouse tours, speakers bureaus, and nonpartisan voters' guides and forums.
  • Access to Justice -- fosters programs that deliver legal services to the poor; works closely with and provides direct grants to Summit Legal Aid to secure pro bono or low bono legal representation for eligible clients.
  • Community Giving - provides grants for law-related programs including Domestic Violence Services of SWPA, CASA for Kids Inc. (Court-Appointed Child Advocates), and others. The Holiday Gift Drive for Children funds charitable organizations serving children in temporary placement, foster care, and homeless shelters. Law School scholarships, two at $1,000 each, are awarded to county residents attending Pitt or Duquesne Law School.
