Mission
Established in 1989 for the purpose of further cultivating the science of jurisprudence, improving the legal and judicial system, and facilitating the administration of justice through the support of pro bono efforts, legal services for the indigent, law-related education and scholarships, and public information and educational initiatives.
Programs and Services
- Civic Education - promotes law-related education in the schools and community of Washington County; provides assistance to the county’s public libraries; hosts programs such as the annual Law Day Celebration, “I Signed the Constitution!”, “Legal Issues Now that you are 18”, Rule of Law series, Courthouse tours, speakers bureaus, and nonpartisan voters' guides and forums.
- Access to Justice - fosters programs that deliver legal services to the poor; works closely with Southwestern Pennsylvania (SWPA) Legal Aid to secure legal representation for eligible clients in cases where conflicts of interest occur; creates opportunities for members of the legal profession to provide pro bono representation to the indigent; and provides direct grants to SWPA Legal Aid for its limited representation custody program and general operations.
- Community Giving - provides grants for law-related programs, including Domestic Violence Services of SWPA, CASA for Kids Inc. (Court Appointed Child Advocates), and LeMoyne Community Center ("Law Works 4 You" program). The Holiday Gift Drive for Children funds charitable organizations serving children in temporary placement, foster care, and homeless shelters. Law school scholarships, two at $1,000 each, are awarded to county residents attending Pitt or Duquesne law schools.
