Established in 1989 for the purpose of further cultivating the science of jurisprudence, improving the legal and judicial system, and facilitating the administration of justice through the support of pro bono efforts, legal services for the indigent, law-related education and scholarships, and public information and educational initiatives.

Programs and Services

  • Civic Education: WCBF promotes law-related education in the public schools and community, and provides assistance to the county's public libraries. In cooperation with the Bar Association, WCBF provides programs such as the annual Law Day Celebration, "I Signed the Constitution!" and "Legal Issues Now that you are 18" programs, People's Law School multi-week series, Courthouse tours, speakers bureaus, "Justice Day" programs, voters' guides, judicial forums, and more.
  • Community Giving: WCBF provides grants to a variety of local agencies for law-related programs including Domestic Violence Services of SWPA and CASA for Kids, as well as financial and volunteer support for projects such as "Law Works for You," a year-long justice awareness program for youth at the LeMoyne Community Center. Through an annual holiday gift drive, it provides thousands of dollars each year to help children in homeless shelters or foster care.
  • Access to Justice: WCBF fosters programs that deliver legal services to the indigent and pro bono representation to the needy. It provides direct grants to SWPA Legal Services to fund custody representation programs and general operations.
  • Scholarships: WCBF provides scholarships to Washington County residents attending law school at the Univ. of Pittsburgh and Duquesne. WCBF also promotes the advancement of continuing education for those in the legal profession through its Educational Assistance Fund. It also maintains a Member Assistance Fund for Bar Association members experiencing a health- or emergency-related crisis.
