Each March, Women’s History Month offers an opportunity to reflect on the profound contributions women have made, and continue to make, in shaping our communities. In the world of philanthropy, women are not only participants; they are leaders, decision-makers, and catalysts for meaningful change. At the Washington County Community Foundation, we see this influence every day.
Women in our community are supporting local initiatives and investing in causes that matter deeply to them and their families. Research consistently shows that women are more likely to be involved in philanthropy. In fact, women influence or make approximately 85% of charitable giving decisions in high-income households. Studies also show that women are more likely to give overall and, in many cases, contribute a higher percentage of their income than men.
Beyond financial contributions, women make up the majority of the nonprofit workforce, representing roughly 70% to 75% of employees in the sector, and they hold a significant share of leadership roles. From Board Chairs to Trustees to volunteers and staff, the WCCF has been fortunate to be guided by dedicated and talented women who help shape the organization’s vision and strengthen its impact. Their insight and involvement ensure the Foundation remains responsive to the evolving needs of our community while fostering meaningful, long-term results.
We proudly recognize Deborah Takach, Lynn Stout, and Carlyn Belczyk for their leadership as Board Chairs and lasting contributions to the Foundation and the broader Washington County community, and we look forward to the continued leadership of incoming Chair Dr. Geraldine M. Jones.
As Dr. Jones shares, “Women play such an important role in strengthening our communities, not only through their generosity, but through their leadership, service, and willingness to get involved. I’m truly excited to step into this role and continue building on the Foundation’s important work.”
While their contributions may take many forms, the impact is the same. Women across Washington County are helping to shape a vibrant philanthropic landscape through both generosity and service, creating meaningful and lasting change.
The influence of women in philanthropy is only expected to grow. Women are projected to control a significant majority of wealth in the coming decades through the “Great Wealth Transfer,” further amplifying their role in charitable giving and community leadership. Here in Washington County, that impact is already taking shape, and initiatives like the PA Giving Pledge are helping to inspire individuals and families to commit to giving back in meaningful ways. This Women’s History Month, we celebrate the women who give not only financially, but through their time, leadership, and vision. Their philanthropy tells a powerful story of compassion, intentionality, and lasting impact.
