South Hills Pet Rescue
To rescue and rehabilitate animals in the southwestern Pennsylvania region.
Programs and Services
- The mission of SHPR is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome dogs of all breeds, with all needs. Nick Ferraro, a professional dog trainer purchased South Hills Pet Resort, a boarding and training facility in 2012. In August 2013, the kennel was asked to help a local animal rescue that had been overwhelmed with dogs pulled from high-kill shelters set to be euthanized for behavioral issues.
- The kennel agreed to take in 13 dogs, but 62 dogs were dropped off at their door filling all of the resort's boarding kennels. South Hills Pet Rescue was born. Today South Hills Pet Rescue an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, houses an average of 80-100 rescue dogs at all times. Since its inception in 2013, SHPR has rehabilitated and re-homed over 3,100 dogs.
- The shelter successfully plans to meet the needs of all incoming dogs, staying true to our mission of "Saving All Breeds with All Needs." We have established a position among high-kill shelters, humane officers, and the community that we accept the challenges of animals that have behavioral and medical concerns. Taking in these dogs allows us to place an emphasis on reducing the euthanasia and increasing adoptions.
- All dogs that are rescued by SHPR are processed through the Adoption Ready Program that includes required age appropriate vaccines, preventative flea, tick, and heartworm treatment, behavioral assessment and training, microchipping, treatment of illness and medical emergencies, and spay or neuter
