When an individual or family begins to consider charitable giving, their trusted professional advisor is often the first to be consulted.
The James H. McCune Acorn Society was established to recognize professional advisors who have helped clients achieve their charitable objectives through the Washington County Community Foundation. Cumulatively, Society members have been instrumental in bringing charitable gifts to the Foundation totaling well over $10 million.
The James H. McCune Acorn Award was created to recognize professional advisors who have enlisted the services of the Washington County Community Foundation to assist clients in achieving charitable goals.
About James H. McCune
James H. McCune, special counsel to the law firm of Bowles Rice, is a graduate of Kent State University and the West Virginia University College of Law. He is a former Washington County Solicitor, a former Board member of the United Way of Washington County and a past President of the local Red Cross. He has devoted countless hours to community service, including coaching mock trial teams and chairing the Continuing Legal Education Committee for over 15 years. Since 1989, James has served as a trustee and former Chairman of the Washington County Bar Foundation, supporting legal services, education, scholarships, and public information initiatives. James was one of the incorporators of the Washington County Community Foundation, serving as its Founding Chairman of the Board of Trustees and also serving as Chairman from 2020 to 2022.
“In 1995 a group of local community leaders decided that charitably minded individuals in Washington County should have a local vehicle to achieve their charitable goals, and that philanthropic decisions impacting Washington County should be made by local people who understand our county and our communities. The Washington County Community Foundation was initiated in that year, and I gladly served as one of its incorporators and was honored to have been selected as the Founding Chairman of the Board. I served again as Chairman in 2020 when the Foundation's quick and impactful response to the COVID virus illustrated how vital it was to have a community foundation devoted to Washington County. Of all the charities I have been involved with over the years, I am especially proud of my involvement with the Washington County Community Foundation because it has become a philanthropic leader in our community.”James H.
